2000 was the premier of the Pleasants County Agricultural Youth Fair. Jason Hughes, who was the SMHS Vocational Agriculture teacher, was instrumental in the organization of this event. He brought this vision to the staff at the Pleasants County Extension Office and together they worked to make this a reality. They saw a need for vo-ag students as well as 4-H'ers in Pleasants County to have an outlet to showcase their project work. Under their leadership, the Pleasants County Agricultural Youth Fair Board was formed. Members of the founding board were Jason Hughes, Steve Bonanno, Rex Cox, Jack Smith, Brenda Smith, Alice Faye Bonanno, Traci Brammer, Dan Greenleaf, Bill Bradfield, Missy Strickler, and Mark Bailey.
The first fair was a 2-day event that offered 5 lambs and 15 hogs for sale on the auction block at the livestock sale. Our first fair also saw entertainment on Saturday from noon-6pm. As we have grown through the years, so has our entertainment schedule to include both Saturday and Sunday. The growth and prosperity of the fair lies solely on the support of our local community and we continue to strive to build the event.
